Professional golf could be heading for another major shake-up.
On 8 September 2026, LIV Golf entered Chapter 11 bankruptcy proceedings in the United States as part of a major restructuring of the league. LIV says the process is intended to give it the opportunity to restructure its financial obligations and potentially return in a new form in 2027.
But the news raises one particularly interesting question for golf fans:
What happens to some of the biggest names in golf if LIV Golf as we know it disappears?
LIV Changed Professional Golf
When LIV Golf arrived in 2022, it challenged the traditional professional golf model almost overnight.
Huge guaranteed contracts and enormous prize funds attracted major champions and some of the best-known golfers in the world, including Bryson DeChambeau, Jon Rahm, Phil Mickelson and Cameron Smith.
Its arrival also created a significant divide in the professional game. Many LIV players disappeared from regular PGA Tour competition, leaving major championships and selected international events as some of the few opportunities for fans to see many of the world’s leading golfers competing together.
Whatever your view of LIV Golf, its impact on professional golf has been difficult to ignore.
Now, the landscape could be changing again.
LIV Golf Is Restructuring — Not Necessarily Disappearing
Chapter 11 does not automatically mean LIV Golf is shutting down.
LIV says it is using the court-supervised process to address its financial obligations while working towards what could effectively become a new version of the league.
Its proposed restructuring involves BC Partners Credit and could result in a new player-first ownership model, with LIV intending to resume global team-based competition in 2027. The proposal still requires the necessary court and stakeholder approvals.
LIV itself describes the process as winding down “LIV 1.0” while attempting to preserve the league under new ownership.
That means the question isn’t simply whether LIV survives.
It’s what LIV looks like if it does.
What Happens to the Players?
This is where things get particularly interesting.
The bankruptcy filing shows that several high-profile LIV players are among the league’s unsecured creditors. Jon Rahm, Bryson DeChambeau, Dustin Johnson and Cameron Smith are among the players listed as being owed money.
There is also uncertainty surrounding existing player contracts as part of the restructuring. Reporting on the bankruptcy proceedings indicates LIV is seeking to move away from its existing contractual structure as it develops its proposed new model.
For players, that could eventually create some big decisions.
Do they commit to a restructured LIV Golf?
Do they explore opportunities elsewhere?
Or could some attempt to return to golf’s traditional tours?
Could LIV Players Simply Return to the PGA Tour?
Not necessarily.
Even if a golfer is eventually released from his LIV obligations, that doesn’t automatically restore PGA Tour membership or tournament eligibility.
Earlier in 2026, the PGA Tour created a limited Returning Member Program. Brooks Koepka used that pathway to return, while Jon Rahm, Bryson DeChambeau and Cameron Smith did not.
More recently, PGA Tour CEO Brian Rolapp said the Tour is not currently considering another returning-member programme like the previous one.
So if LIV’s current structure ultimately disappears, some very famous golfers could find themselves facing complicated decisions about where — and under what conditions — they can play.
Could the DP World Tour Be an Option?
For some players, the DP World Tour could form part of the picture.
But there isn’t one simple answer that applies to every LIV golfer. Membership status, eligibility requirements, previous sanctions and individual circumstances could all affect what happens next.
Some players may also continue focusing heavily on major championships and other events for which they remain eligible.
The result could be a period in which different LIV players take very different paths.
What Happens to the LIV Teams?
Then there are the teams.
LIV didn’t only build a league around individual golfers. It also invested heavily in team identities such as Crushers GC, Legion XIII, Ripper GC and Majesticks GC.
The idea was to develop sporting franchises with value beyond the individual players.
If LIV successfully emerges from restructuring, team golf is expected to remain part of its plans. LIV says it intends to return to global, team-based competition in 2027.
If the restructuring fails, however, the future and value of those team brands becomes far less certain.
Could LIV Golf 2.0 Survive?
Absolutely — and that’s important to remember.
At this stage, LIV Golf itself is not saying that the league is over.
The organisation intends to emerge from Chapter 11 and launch a restructured version of the competition. Its proposed model could involve new investment and greater player ownership.
Whether that plan ultimately succeeds will depend on the restructuring process, court approvals, financing and the participation of players.
So we’re not yet looking at the end of LIV Golf.
We’re looking at a period of significant uncertainty about what comes next.
Professional Golf Could Be Heading for Another Reset

Now another chapter may be beginning.
Will LIV successfully reinvent itself for 2027?
Will its biggest stars remain?
Could more players eventually find a route back to the PGA Tour or DP World Tour?
And could golf fans eventually see more of the world’s leading players competing against one another regularly again?
For now, those questions remain unanswered.
But the next few months could have a significant impact on the future of professional golf.
