Meta Description: Engine screaming and the cart barely moving? These are the usual bad clutch symptoms on Yamaha, Club Car and EZGO gas carts, and what to check before you buy the wrong part.
A gas golf cart does not have a gearbox like a bakkie. It has a clutch and a drive belt. The engine turns the drive clutch. The belt turns the driven clutch. The driven clutch turns the wheels.
When that clutch is tired, the engine can sound fine and the cart still goes nowhere. People often blame the engine. Most of the time it is the clutch, the belt, or both.
These are the 7 warning signs we see most often on Yamaha, Club Car, and EZGO gas carts in the workshop.
1. The engine revs The cart does not move.
This is the classic symptom. You press the pedal, the motor screams, and the cart creeps or sits still. The clutch is simply not grabbing the belt. It can be a worn drive clutch, a glazed belt, or a driven clutch that is not opening and closing as it should.
2. It is fine on the flat and dies on the hill.
A weak clutch will pull away on level ground and then slip as soon as the cart has to work. If it only fails on an uphill or with passengers in the back, do not ignore it. Slipping builds massive friction heat, and heat destroys belts.
3. It takes too long to pull away.
A healthy cart should take up drive smoothly, not after a long rev. If you have to rev it hard before it moves, the clutch springs, buttons, or rollers are usually worn. The belt may already be glazed from the constant slip.
4. Squeal, chatter, or a burnt-rubber smell.
A short squeal on a cold start can be normal. A squeal every time you pull away is not. Chatter and a hot rubber smell mean the belt is slipping in the sheaves. Keep driving it like this, and you will be paying for a new belt as well as a clutch.
5. Black dust around the clutch.
Pop the cover. Fine black dust is belt material. A little dust after a new belt beds in is normal, but a pile of it means something has been slipping for a while. Check the belt edges. If they are shiny, cracked, or frayed, the belt is done. If the sheaves are scored, the clutch needs attention too.
6. It will not reach top speed.
Drive clutch problems usually show up as poor take-off. Driven clutch problems often show up as poor top speed. The cart pulls away, then runs out of legs. On EZGO gas carts, the driven clutch angle matters, so the wrong aftermarket clutch will never feel right even if it is brand new.
7. The cart creeps at idle.
The clutch should be open at idle. If the cart wants to move while you are sitting still, the drive clutch may be sticking, or the engine idle is too high. Do not just live with it. A clutch that stays engaged wears the belt every single minute the engine is running.
What it is not
Before you order a replacement clutch, rule out the simple things:
- A stretched, glazed, or wrong-size belt will mimic almost every bad clutch symptom.
- A dirty or sticking governor cable can make take-off feel completely dead.
- Low engine power, a blocked air filter, or a rich carburetor will feel slow, but the engine will not scream while the cart sits still.
- Dragging brakes will make the cart lazy, but they will not cause the engine to over-rev with no drive.
The Golden Rule: If the engine revs and the wheels do not, start by inspecting the belt and the clutch.
Drive Clutch or Driven Clutch?
You usually need to replace one, not both.
- Poor take-off, needs a lot of revs to move: Look at the drive clutch (front) and the belt.
- Pulls away fine, then will not reach speed: Look at the driven clutch (rear).
- Dust, smell, and slip on hills: Check the belt first, then identify the clutch that is scoring the belt.
Note: Yamaha G29, Club Car DS, Club Car Precedent, and EZGO TXT clutches are not the same part. Year and engine model matter. For example, a 28-degree and a 36-degree EZGO-driven clutch are not interchangeable.
What to do next
Stop driving the cart hard. Slipping components only get more expensive the longer you ignore them.
Send us your cart’s make, model, and year, and tell us whether it struggles to pull away or struggles to reach speed. We stock premium, exact-fit drive and driven clutches for Yamaha, Club Car, and EZGO gas carts.
